Persona

After finally getting completed with the surveys, I found and chose the best persona for my GUI creation assignments.

Kids (Age 7-9)

Based on the survey results, most of the question given are answered by their parents. Some of them are willing to answer the survey with parent's help, since my survey is obviously cannot be understand by most kids, and they the need parents guidance. Back to the survey, most kids like a very simple game, like puzzle and memory test game. It is very clearly that most parents want their kids to play video games that have educational purposes. The kids surely will love if the video games serve something that is more colorful and full with enjoyment, while keeping th educational theme running.

Teenagers (Age 19-22)

For the teenagers group, other than playing video games, they always tend to use internet, but it is actually as same as the time they spend for playing video games everyday. Plus, most of them are influenced first on the internet to play video games. They are definitely on to the online gaming type, which is can be considered as a trend nowadays. Also, based on the survey on what kind of genre they like on video games, they prefer for Sci-Fi theme, which is basically about futuristic settings with all high-tech equipment, like laser weapons and robots. While they like Sci-Fi theme, they sure love to have some action theme on it.

Adult (Age 40-50)

Frankly saying, in Malaysia, there is not much older people who played games in their young ages. This is because in Malaysia, video games industry still does not hit the scene big enough in the past. The old generation never had a chance to try any type of video games, compare to the other countries. Still, there is some people that can give the best answer, thus giving me the false impression that old generation people in Malaysia never tried any oldest game, unless if they play them for now. From the results, they played video games from arcade store. Well, that is really expect-able and from what I understand, even kids started playing video games from arcade store, but nowadays, cyber cafe is another term. The arcade games mostly installed on most big mall, in the specific locations. Until today, the arcade games still running big and played on most people. This is where the nostalgia moment for older people to play again the arcade games back in 20 years ago.

Final Groupwork- Final Artwork

Here is the final artwork for my group. It is in form of digital work, done by using Adobe Photoshop program.

Click here for bigger version (A3 size)

Artwork Briefing

What is in the artwork is representing the title of our project: Creative Multimedia. What we have executed in this artwork is all about the puzzle as well. Since our group has choose 'Puzzle' as a term to relate it with Creative Multimedia, we decide to produce an artwork that has a puzzle theme on it.

What is in the artwork is all about arts, which some of it is in drawing form, some is in 3D rendered modeling and some are digital paintings. Here, we are trying to show that in Creative Multimedia, we do a lot of artworks in different ways and outcomes. Painting, modeling and manipulating are our jobs in creative multimedia faculty. It does not matter how bad the artwork is produced, as long as people do understand what we are trying to create and manage to do it with our own hands, and the artworks we produced should have a little info or possibly meaning and explanation for better understanding.

In this artwork, there is also a visual where a hand is drawing the artworks while the part of his/her arm is all break up into the pieces and turn into the puzzle shapes. This is obviously shown the puzzle theme that we have choose before. The true meaning of those puzzle pieces is that the puzzle pieces represent the handwork of us to produce the artworks and how hard-working we are. Every pieces show a capability, idea, teamwork, creationism, reliability, reaction, positive thinking, inspiration, credibility, determination, and personal talent. These are all positive behaviors and personalities as a student in Creative Multimedia. Not only that, the puzzle pieces also actually represents on how far we have achieved in arts. Every pieces is just like a level. One piece is a progress. So, if we managed to collect the pieces and combined them all together to form something, that means we have achieved something on art. That is why we need all those kinds of personalities to accomplish our artwork in creative multimedia. In other words; "Every Pieces Count". This quote represents that every thing that needed to accomplish something should not be missed, even a single one. Same goes to puzzle, that we need every pieces of it to fully completed the puzzle picture.

The pen that the hand is holding represents the theme of the artwork; Creative Multimedia. After all, it is a main root for this kind of project. Also, the term of creative multimedia is a general idea of what kind of artwork we have produced so far. It is all about creative. So, there is no way we forget about the 'creativity' theme, do we?

Overall, our final artwork is done in digital form and generally gives some explanation about creative multimedia and how puzzles can be related to it.

Final Groupwork- The Essay

Puzzle in Creative Multimedia

What is creativity anyway? Creativity basically means a way to do things differently or to come up with new ideas or methods that can help to improve something. Creativity comes when there is a need to come up with something totally different or to make an innovation out of something, then work hard on the idea to make a reality. Then what is multimedia? Multimedia is a medium that consists of various media forms. The forms are text, audio, video, animation, images, and also interactivity. In this modern day, multimedia is widely use in various fields such as education, business, entertainment and advertisement which contributes on improving our way of living.

So know, what is creative multimedia? Creative multimedia is the process of generating new ideas or to improve the multimedia itself and its usage as well as solving existing ideas and also improving the design and use of technology or to apply fine arts in multimedia to give it an artistic sense or to enhance visual effects to improve its presentation and help the viewer to easily understand the message that is given to him.

After analyzing on creative multimedia we now understand what crative multimedia is all about. We can also relate on what creative multimedia is in just a simple statement; Creative Multimedia is just like a puzzle. So, why a puzzle? How does it relate to multimedia anyway?

Puzzle relates creative multimedia in terms of growth and formation. As we all know the puzzle comes in big or tiny little pieces, which are scramble, jumbled up together. Each and every piece has something in common and can come up with something big. We always overlook, fail to observe details of stuffs that we do. If we were to appreciate and look over the smallest details of whatever we’re doing, then there would be more inventors and creative people thinking up ways generating something new or solving problems big or small. The puzzle shows us that small things can grow and show the final end result. One connecting to the other and gives support to the neighboring pieces. Just like creative multimedia, it is made up by jumbled up pieces, which then are all compile at one place.

Creative multimedia is not just about art, it’s also mixture of technology as well. Different profession when combine create new which is called creative multimedia. A puzzle when finish creates something beautiful, and just like creative multimedia, if everything is done well enough it will be the birth of new creative and beautiful outcome. Not only that both share the aspect in both giving support and creating a beautiful outcome, both creative multimedia and puzzle can sometimes be confusing. In a way that sometimes a piece doesn’t fit in and you just have to find the right one to accomplish it. Here at creative multimedia is not different than said.

In a way that sometimes a piece doesn’t fit in and you just have to find the right one to accomplish it. Here at creative multimedia is not different than said. When you just thought you had the right stuff, it just doesn’t fit to the people whom you’re presenting to. And this is where you have to come out with another better solution to finish the job. The thing that ‘puzzles’ us most in creative multimedia is that the faculty is made up of opinions rather than pure formula. The eyes of many judge your work on effectiveness and beauty and that’s where you need to know about your audience and their hearts. This concept is also applied in jigsaw puzzles. From what we can say is that both share almost the same concept and principle of art.

Whenever someone thinking about what they want to do with anything that related to arts, someone might have a problem of thinking the solution on how to produce it to please anyone or the audiences who want to see his or her arts. This kind of situation is pretty much like a puzzle, where we sometimes we need to think on how to solve it. The puzzle itself sometimes requires a lot of hard work to put it on in order for it to be solved completely, and it same goes to arts.

To conclude, creative multimedia is like a puzzle where there are many pieces, whether they are small or big, that are involving skills. Skills required in order putting the right pieces and there is also a formation where all the pieces are equally important in order to make a wonderful idea. To consider the details of something very carefully and never overlook something even if it’s small, improving skills in terms of creativity, analytical and technical, exploring many fields in the multimedia elements and help solving various problems can help in generating new ideas or innovative ideas that can be useful in the future.

Final Groupwork- Sketches

For the Creative Studies group project, our group have been decided to produce an artwork regarding about the theme given. As for the artwork, we will produce a digital artwork and printed it on an A3 size (about a standard poster size).but before we do the final artwork we do a sketch and the idealization.

This is the sketch that our group have make.We have combine all our sketch to give an idea to our final artwork.

After that,we make some experiment work from photoshop for testing for our final artwork.

-----------------------------------------------------
For this first entry, we will show our mind map creation for the project.

As for the mind map, we try to find the suitable terms to make it related to the main theme; Creative multimedia. Here are the lists of words that we have took for our group:

- Burning
- Melting
- Chocolate Cake
- Sexy
- Dignity
- Magic
- Speed
- Time Crisis
- Magnitude
- Eiffel Tower
- Chips
- Rubik Cube
- Box
- Electric Shock

It is really hard to find the suitable, yet different than the others. It is funny that we find something that totally unrelated to creative multimedia term, but still, if we can find do that in more creative way, that could be better.

We also trying to make a mind map based on a selected term, which is 'Magic'.

Turns out that we find it very common. Not very common in general, but we need to find something more than that.

So, for final decision, we have decided to choose a term that is very uncommon and not really comes from of our mind when we are trying to think something that relates to creative multimedia.

Our selected term is Puzzle.

Based on the mindmap above, that is what we have listed out anything that out from the puzzle term.

Crazy Thinking - Random Words

Whenever if we want to think something and to find some new ideas, we need to think anything that related by finding random words. This kind of crazy thinking is the best way to develop lots of new ideas to associate with.

In order to become a creative person, of course we need sometimes to think something out of the box, which means something that is crazy enough. Lets say, if we have something to do with, we might get lost in our mind to generate new ideas or solutions. So, in order to find them, we might need to find some random words that realted to things that we work for. Random words can be anything, whether the personality, characteristic or the way of the behavior of the the thing.

For this kind of crazy thinking by finding random words and how I will generate the ideas on it, here is the given situation:

Task: Create scary images or object that will instill for among people through out the ages.

It may be simple enough to do, but sometimes we need to think that out of the common thing. We should not always think that skull, blood, ghosts or anything like that is scary anymore. So, we use something like kitten, to make something scary. So, how does it work? Now, here are some random words related to kitten:
- Sharp teeth
- Claws
- Fur
- Vicious Eyes

Here is what I have write on the paper about the certain characteristics of kitten. If I meant to make scary images, based on kitten, here are some examples:

This is just a few sketches I done to make scary images. It maybe not look that good, but I guess I have the idea on how to do this, based on random words.

Juxtapostion 2

It is again about juxtaposition, but this time, we have been given the tasks.

In the class, we have been taught about how to related something in crazy ways, by combining two words that we never know what are they. Then, match both two words to create something. Here are the things I did in the class:

The picture shows the series of words and variables that need to combined to each other to show the outcome of images. For example, I have chose 'Light' and 'Root'. From this juxtaposition exercise, we need to create an image that relates to the couple of words we have chose from the lists. Based on 'Light and Wood' words, I have created a picture based on it (look at the picture). We may never see anything like that in our real life, but that is how the juxtaposition does to us. The same things I did to 'Duck and Tree' and 'Dog and Wood' can be refer to the image as well. By combining two variables that some of them are quite non-sense, sometimes we just don't realize that they generally give us the idea to do something special. Two different variables might even help you to achieve more than that.

For the task, we need to create some sort of metaphor based on the words given. This time, we need to create some passages about that word, that are not literally. If we need to create things about something particular, we need to create some sort of metaphor or simile passages that relate two words. If we read someone's poem or literature related sources, we might see that some people create the passages about two different things and how they can related those two things together to form something that somehow can be accepted by human's minds. So, as the tasks given, here are what are we need to and how am I going to answer this:

Create a passage/writing that describe the concept of “Pain”
- Pain sometimes is just a spray bottle. Seeing something that comes out from the bottle is kind of waste, but if we stop doing on it, it will stay remain.

Create a passage/writing that describe the concept of “Life”

- Life is like a battery. The longer, the shorter the power it will decrease

Create a passage/writing that describe the concept of “Happiness”

- If the ball can go under and lower, same thing happens to the happiness. We need to keep it roll and move on with it.

Create a passage/writing that describe the concept of “Love”, with chillies.

- The spicy filling of chili will makes your heart goes faster, face turns to red and heat goes up, the same thing goes to love.

Create a passage/writing that describe the concept of “Woman” (In this case, I chose woman since I am a man and need to write something that opposes my gender)

- Woman is just like a tiny piece of our hair. They are many around us and can be picked up easily, but we only never know whether we got it shorter, taller, perfect, broken, straighten, curly, black, or white

Understanding Juxtapostion

Today lesson is about Juxtapostion.

What is juxtaposition? Juxtaposition can be defined as placing two variables, side by side and their contrast or similarities are shown through comparison. Many creative processes rely on juxtaposition. By juxtaposing two objects or words next to each other, human brain will automatically associate or transfer meaning. It is usually ‘turning’ something familiar to something less familiar or vice-versa.

Juxtaposition can be refers to two related variables, which has the same common and general idea towards them, but rather than keeping it constant, it opposed. For example, we take this kind of situation where some students think that there will be holiday near the mid year. Sometimes, not every year that all schools will be in holiday and the holiday might even started two months later or one month before. In general speaking, students think midyear should be a holiday, but not every year will be happened because of changing event calendar. From this statement, we might sure that most students have set to their own mind that holiday will occur very midyear, but they don’t realizes how the events changed every year, which can make either the holiday time early or late.

Mortar and Pestle (Class Homework)

MORTAR AND PESTLE

What is it?
- It is a tool, used for cooking in traditional way.

What is it mainly used for?
- It is used to grind or crush the ingredients of cooking, like herbs and spices. This way, people can easily cook the ingredients because they have been crushed into small pieces and can be keep safely.

Where is the originality of mortar and pestle?
- It has been existed in such a long time ago, where people lived in a cave also used the same thing like mortar and pestle. It may be slightly different that we see today, but it is surely known that they will used to grind the food, so the food can be eaten easily. Nobody really knows where the true origin of mortar and pestle is. The archeologists around the world found it in different places and cannot find the true sources or any sign of the originality, only the shape of tool or any mortar and pestle related objects were found. The only significant thing is mortar and pestle comes with different size, shape and design from each of the cultures, but the usage remain the same.

What is it made from?
- Mortar and pestle is made either from porcelain, stoneware, marble, wood, brass, or iron. Each one differs from the country or culture. The size and shape also different, but the usage is surely the same.

Is there any other usage of Mortar and pestle, other than for cooking purposes?
- Mortar and pestle commonly known for grinding food materials. It is also used for traditional medical setup, where old time people used it to make ingredients for the medicines and drugs. In general, any ingredients or food stuff can be used in mortar and pestle.

MIND MAP
Based on mind map, here is my little description of what I have done.

Saturday, July 31, 2010

Convergent and Divergent thinking, Logical Mindmap and Stereotypes

For this week class, students have learned about Convergent and Divergent thinking, Logical Mindmap and Stereotypes.

The meaning of each of these words (taken from the class leassons):

- Convergent thinking is a term coined by Joy Paul Guilford as the opposite of divergent thinking. It generally means the ability to give the correct answer to standard questions that do not require significant creativity, for instance in most tasks in school and on standardized multiple-choice tests for intelligence.

Personal thought: I believe it has something to do with general lesson like History lesson, where it has right or wrong. Well, that is my thought. I do not know is there anything I can think of that related with it.

- Divergent thinking is a thought process or method used to generate creative ideas by exploring many possible solutions. It is often used in conjunction with convergent thinking, which follows a particular set of logical steps to arrive at one "correct" solution. Divergent thinking typically occurs in a spontaneous, free-flowing manner, such that many ideas are generated in a random, unorganized fashion. Many possible solutions are explored in a short amount of time, and unexpected connections are drawn. Following divergent thinking, ideas and information are organized and structured using convergent thinking

Personal thought: So, in short, randomly generated idea can be get through divergent thinking and can be applied without any right or wrong? I guess that is why people who has creativity in mind should not be worry about what have they think about.

- Mind mapping, introduced by Tony Buzan is a great tool for idea generation and brainstorming. It enhance both sides of the human brain and widely used in taking notes, research or generating new ideas. A creative Mind Map is able to stimulate and create interest to the individual and also to the viewer.

Personal thought: Mind mapping sure is the best way to organize something, just like calendar, only different is it more fun to make and easy to get. Plus, mind map only contains something that is very short and simple, but easy to remember.

- Stereotype is a commonly held public belief about specific social groups or types of individuals. The concepts of "stereotype" and "prejudice" are often confused with many other different meanings. Stereotypes are standardized and simplified conceptions of groups based on some prior assumptions. Generally speaking, stereotypes are not based on objective truth but rather subjective and sometimes unverifiable content-matter.

Personal thought: I feel that stereotype is pretty much like refer to specific group. Just like people’s races. Different races have their specific thing that visualizes their own races and customs.

Between Creativity, Invention, Innovation and Novelty

"A man paints with his brains and not with his hands." - Michelangelo Buonarroti;1475-1564

Based on the quote above, now I should be able to understand how the creativity works to people who earn the creativity.

From the class lesson I learned, the creative person is the one who generates new ideas. And can create a creative process. While, the creative process is how these new ideas, solutions, and inventions are produced. So, in order to make something, a person needs to be creative and in order to be a creative person, creative person is needed. This way, the creativity will exists through somebody’s mind and be able to make something. Also, quoted from class lesson:

Creativity is the process of generating something new that has value. There are many new ideas and concepts, but some may not have value and hence may not be considered creative. A creation is something original that has value. (Haggins, 1995, p. 3)
Therefore, creativity does not happen inside people’s heads, but in the interaction between a person’s thoughts and a sociocultural context. It is a systemic rather than individual phenomenon. (Csikszentmihalyi, 1996, p.23)

There are four types of creativity. Creative people fall into these 4 catagories:

1) Aesthetic Organizers.
2) Boundary Pushers — those who take an existing idea and push it a little further.
3) Inventors — those who take existing knowledge and create new ideas — the Edisons of this world.
4) The rarest group: Boundary Breakers — the Leonardos and the Copernicuses.

( A paraphrasing of Elliot Eisner (1933-), American art educator)

However, some people considering that creativity is almost has the same meaning as Innovation, which is some sort of misunderstanding concept. Innovation means to bring new ideas or making changes or improvise something, based on Oxford Dictionary. In short, innovation only existed based to something that is already existed while creativity is applied to something very new. In other words, innovation is the process of turning ideas into practical reality. Based on the class lessons as well, innovation is the process of making improvements by introducing something new, the realization of a creative idea in a social context.

How about the invention? It might be related to innovation things. Well, invention is the outcome of something that the inventor has produced or done, based on existing results or knowledge for something that has purposes. The most well known invention thing is the telephone, which was invented by Alexander Graham Bell. Before, nobody really knows how that thing works.

Moreover, it was not widely used, even some people claimed that the telephone does not serve any purposes to people. That thought was wrong. As we look today, the telephone has become common, but important thing in our daily life. The best invention in the history is still existed.

Now, let’s take a look about the novelty. Novelty is the quality of being new. It might also refer to something unusual from the current thing. The best example is the fashion apparel. We see that there are so many fashions design. Today, people have created so many fashion designs, just only based from one thing. If people gave only one piece of cloth, many people will design something with in so many different ways. Some may have a novelty in it, where it might be a fresh new thing that has been applied.

Creativity Is Everywhere!

From this post, I have a couple of pics that truly show how the creativity acts in anywhere, anytime and even anyone who done it.

1. Monalisa Painting done with Coffee Cup

There are 3,604 of coffee cups needed to set up the painting of Mona Lisa in Sydney, Australia where the Aroma Festival event happened. Every cups has different type of coffee to make a different shade of colour.

2. Street Painting

Julian Beever was known as 3D street painter. He has created lots of drawing on the street which make them look like 3D and pop up from the street surface. The drawings need to be look at the certain angle and direction, since the drawings he made are actually non flat. He plays with the perspective, so the drawing will appear in 3 dimesional

What builds our Creativity?

Defining creativity might easy to some people, but are those kind of people really got creativity at all? Is creativity a natural talent or an achievement? In creativity, there are some myths. It's all about that only certain people can get creativity, true or not? No, not at all.

1) Special talented people only are creative
Just because they are talented, doesn't mean they are perfect in creativity. If we want to do something creative, we need to do lots of things with hardwork and patient in order to be crative person. Everyone can do that, not special person only.

2) Being creative is hard
It is hard as first, but it will get easy as time goes by as we spent more time of what we should doing. Like mentioned before...patient.

3) Problems in our life make it more difficult.
The problems are the solutions in the creativity, because after all, problems tend to give you more time to get something in order to work. Of course sometimes we should not take the problems together that are not related to our work together or we might misleading it. But in creativity, every negative things can be turned into positive.

4) I'm not creative!
Creative is not a certain thing that only available to some people. Creative is for everyone. Even the simple, tiny mistake you have done, people can think that it is a creative way to do.

5) Innovation is the domain of geniuses.
The geniuses do the innovation, but that does not mean it can be applied to them only.

6) Got brand new ideas, considered as creative.
New ideas, without confirmation of the working, is not a creative way. Thus, only the idea without extracting it from our brain still is not creative.

7) Brainstorming is hardworking things.
The best way to keep brainstorming simple is to list down all the ideas we got. Even something that is crazy enough to be in our minds, can be jot down to make a lot of improvements, thus generated the ideas of making it.

8) Artists can be creative, only
There are lots of people who are not considered as artists, can do something that most people thinks it is creative. The artist is just a title for the honor of what they have done. It is certainly not a permanent term of creative dictionary in our life.

9) Using structured creative techniques will hinder my ability to be creative.
Just consider as side work. It should not be fully dependable. There are certain things that we night never know to get something in creative way, but the techniques we use might help us to make something, rather than thinning the ability.

Defining Creativity

What does the creative or creativity truly mean? It actually depends on several people, time, place, or anything.

Example 1:
"Creativity is the process of bringing something new into being...creativity requires passion and commitment. Out of the creative act is born symbols and myths. It brings to our awareness what was previously hidden and points to new life. The experience is one of heightened consciousness-ecstasy."
- Rollo May, The Courage to Create

Example 2:
* A "mental activity performed in situations where there is no prior correct solution or answer" (Encyclopedia of Creativity, vol. 2, “Teaching Creativity”)
* A "process of developing new, uncommon, or unique ideas"
* An experience of thinking "characterized by a high degree of innovation and originality, divergent thinking, and risk taking"
* The "generation of novel, useful ideas"
- Iowa State University

For me creativity is some sort of ability, where everyone can have on their own way to produce or execute. Creative is pretty universal. It can be anyone, anytime, anywhere and anyhow.

Some people might say that only certain people have the creativity to make/produce/execute/show something, but no, it is truly wrong. Creativity is not a talent that can only be applied to certain people, but it is a natural ability that everyone can do it.
